Find Out If You Qualify for Support

Various funding options, grants, and schemes are available to help UK property owners access rainwater harvesting and water management solutions.

Eligibility Overview

Rainwater Doctor offers several programmes and funding options to make sustainable water management accessible to more people. Eligibility varies depending on the specific programme, your location, your property type, and your circumstances. This page provides an overview of the different ways you may be able to access support for your rainwater harvesting or water management project.

Free Water Butt Programme Eligibility

The Free Water Butt Programme provides free 200-litre water butts to eligible households in partner areas. Eligibility is determined primarily by your location, as the programme is currently active in selected local authority areas where funding has been secured. Within these areas, priority is given to households on low incomes, households receiving means-tested benefits, households with children, and households in areas at risk of water stress or flooding.

To check if the Free Water Butt Programme is available in your area, enter your postcode on our application page. If the programme is not yet available in your area, you can register your interest and we will notify you when it becomes available. We are actively working to expand the programme to cover all UK households.

Grant Funding for Rainwater Harvesting

Several grant funding sources are available to support rainwater harvesting installations in the UK. The availability and criteria for these grants vary by region and are subject to change. Our team can help you identify and apply for grants that may be applicable to your project.

The Water Efficient Communities scheme, run by water companies in partnership with environmental organisations, provides grants for water efficiency measures including rainwater harvesting. Eligibility varies by water company area, with some companies offering more generous support than others. Typically, grants are available to households and businesses within the water company's supply area, with priority given to measures that demonstrate significant water savings.

The Community Renewable Energy and Efficiency Fund provides grants for community organisations implementing renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. While primarily focused on energy, this fund has supported rainwater harvesting projects where they contribute to overall sustainability objectives. Community organisations including village halls, community centres, and sports clubs may be eligible.

Local authority climate action funds are increasingly available as councils respond to the climate emergency. Many councils have established funds to support local sustainability projects, including water management. Eligibility and funding levels vary significantly between authorities. We recommend contacting your local council's climate or sustainability team to enquire about available funding.

Commercial and Agricultural Eligibility

Businesses and agricultural operations may be eligible for different types of support. The Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme enables businesses to claim 100 percent first-year capital allowances on investments in water-efficient technologies, including rainwater harvesting systems. This effectively reduces the net cost of installation by the value of the corporation tax relief. To qualify, the equipment must meet the water efficiency criteria defined in the Water Technology List.

The Farming Investment Fund provides grants for agricultural businesses investing in productivity and sustainability improvements. Rainwater harvesting and water storage infrastructure are eligible for support under this scheme. Applications are competitive, with funding awarded based on the project's contribution to farm productivity, environmental sustainability, and animal health and welfare.

The Countryside Stewardship Scheme, administered by Natural England, provides funding for environmental improvements on agricultural land. Water management measures including rainwater harvesting may be eligible for support under this scheme, particularly where they contribute to biodiversity, water quality, or flood risk reduction objectives.

Housing Association and Social Housing Eligibility

Housing associations and social housing providers may be eligible for specific funding programmes to support water efficiency improvements in their housing stock. The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, while primarily focused on energy efficiency, has been used to support wider sustainability improvements including water management in some cases. Housing associations should contact their local authority or the relevant funding body for current programme details.

Rainwater Doctor offers preferential pricing and dedicated support for housing association projects, including bulk installation programmes, tenant engagement support, and performance monitoring. Contact our housing team to discuss your requirements.

Self-Funding Your Installation

Even without grant funding, rainwater harvesting systems offer compelling financial returns for most property types. A typical residential system pays for itself through water bill savings within 5 to 10 years, depending on system size, water usage, and local water charges. Commercial systems often achieve payback in 2 to 4 years due to higher water usage and business water charging rates.

We offer flexible payment options including staged payments for larger installations, enabling you to spread the cost of your system over several months. For commercial clients, we can structure installations to align with budget cycles and financial years.
